Saronic Gulf islands

What makes the Saronic Gulf islands stand out of the crowd? For starters, their characteristic traditional architecture gives them this special quaint and, at times, even nostalgic atmosphere, differentiating them from the happy shiny Cyclades. The towns are colorful waterfront clusters of traditional, white or pastel-shaded stone mansions with red-tiled roofs often spreading amphitheatrically on the neighboring hills. The Saronic Gulf islands also boast a rich maritime tradition and played a significant historical role during the Greek war of independence which nowadays is commemorated by flamboyant firework-powered festivities taking place in summer.

Among the islands it is said that cosmopolitan and car-free Hydra boasts the most impressive port, which has been endorsed by many artists, Greek and foreigners alike for many years now. Spetses is a flat relaxed pine-scented island with beautiful, imposing mansions and villas of wealthy ship captains while picturesque Poros is more of a low key and bustling (especially at weekends) complex of two volcanic islets a few hundred meters away from Galatas town in the Peloponnese. With such competition the island of Aigina is understandably said to be the least charming but has, nevertheless, one of the best preserved Doric temples in Greece, making it a must visit for history buffs and ruin lovers.

Even though you could get away with just a day cruise, as many travel guides suggest, the Saronic Gulf islands are great places to relax for a few days and take a break from the hustle of Athens. They can also be used as a convenient springboard for those who want to visit the Peloponnese. Avoid the frantic organised cruises. Instead go to Pireaus hop on a hydrofoil and get off any island, walk around, get smart, eat, swim, relax and enjoy life. You will most certainly not regret it!
